Today, I'm reviewing a new software product that automates backing up cPanel based websites to your local computer.
As most of my subscribers and customers will attest, I don't just recommend Internet marketing products to line my pockets.
It's very important to me that I provide you with objective reviews so that you can truly make the best decision for you and for your business.
Sure, I do make money selling Internet marketing products as an affiliate. But... I will only endorse something and put my name behind it if I am completely confident that the product lives up to, and/or exceeds, its stated values.
So what does that mean to you? It means I review Internet marketing products before or after they are released to the public, and I share my honest opinion with my customers so they can make an informed decision.
This week's review is on a new software product called Backup Smart.
When I was first asked to take a look at this product I was frankly a bit weary... because there are so many software programs out there, surely this one couldn't do anything different.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this software does something that, in my opinion, all website owners that use databases need. Databases these days are used in just about every website. From blogs, to forums, to email autoresponders, to shopping cart software, the list goes on.
If you have a database driven website that changes frequently then you should be backing up that data as frequently as it changes. Sounds easy doesn't it. So why don't more people backup. We all know we should backup our computers regularly, and do we. Some do some don't. Why should your precious website data be any different.
Just look at the rise and rise of content management systems like Wordpress and Joomla / Mambo, not to mention forums where you enter all your data in on the server. I bet you most likely don't have local copies of the data on your computer. This means you really are putting yourself at risk of loss of that data, if your web hosting provider loses your data. Where else are going to turn.?
Ok lets talk about the software.
The software runs on both Windows and MAC OSX. Finally someone is embracing the growing MAC community and runs under Adobe AIR. This Adobe AIR platform is the next best thing to happen to software, since it allows developers to produce software that is cross platform compatible. Best of all it's FREE from Adobe.
Backup Smart has started by catering for cPanel servers only, but the developer has mentioned that there is provision for further hosting platforms to be added in the future.
When you run the program it's nothing fancy, no eye popping graphics here, all you see is screen split into two, one section for your backup tasks and one for the properties, schedule, and log review.
You start with creating a backup task, entering in your website details, assigning it a schedule and deciding what you want to download, and that's it. You are set to backup that website.
The only thing I didn't really like about this software is that you have to be logged on to your local computer in order for it to run. Ideally the software should run as a service in Windows, so you don't need to stay logged in.
You still need to leave your computer running in order for the backup to take place, so for the security conscious you can setup a screen saver password which after a few minutes when the screen saver activates will lock your user account. Then you need to enter a password when you return to the computer. That's as good as logging off.
If you have a lot of websites or even just a few. Once you have created your backup tasks you can save your task list for safe keeping. Should you need to move computers or reinstall the operating system, you don't need to re-enter all your backup tasks. Just reload the task list file you saved and you're back in business.

Overall the software is very good and does just what it says it does. Very intuitive, very quick and easy to use. There are help videos online if you need them.
Download the software for a test run and see what you think of it. You'll be glad you did.
So in conclusion if you have any type of website(s) with databases then you need an Backup Smart to protect those assests you've worked so hard to build.
